HMGMA’s story began in May 2022 when Hyundai Motor Group entered into an agreement with the State of Georgia to build its first dedicated fully electrified vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities in the United States.
HMG chose the 2,900-acre megasite in Bryan County for several reasons including the area’s quality of life, strong regional connectivity, global logistical connections and infrastructure, and existing workforce training programs. In October 2022, HMG broke ground on the Metaplant, its first, state-of-the-art U.S. smart factory, and began production two years later in October 2024.
Once fully operational, there will be more than 8,500 workers on the megasite and HMGMA will produce 300,000 vehicles, with plans to expand in the future. More than 6,900 jobs will be created at off-site suppliers. To date, the economic development agreement is Georgia’s largest in state history and totals more than $7.5 billion.

HMGMA’S first vehicle was a 2025 IONIQ 5 and our second will be a 2026 IONIQ 9.
HMGMA will eventually produce models for Kia and Genesis, which are part of the HMG family.
The megasite consists of the Metaplant, LG Battery Joint Venture (known as HLA Greenpower) and five affiliates including Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Glovis, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Material.
There are 19 suppliers located offsite.
A solar panel-covered parking lot at the front of the megasite and visible from Interstate 16 provides approximately 5% of HMGMA’s electricity needs.
The Metaplant is one of the most technologically advanced manufacturing facilities in the world. There are more than 850 robots and almost 300 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) working alongside our employees, whom we call Meta Pros. Robots do most of the heavy lifting for our Meta Pros while AGVs deliver the bulk of parts during the assembly process.
All processes of production at HMGMA—order collection, procurement, logistics and production—are optimized utilizing AI and data.
After assembly, each vehicle is tested on HMGMA’s test track which is just shy of 2 miles long.
HMGMA utilizes 21 heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell electric XCIENT trucks to transport vehicle parts from suppliers across the region to the Megasite on a daily basis. This industry-leading initiative represents HMGMA’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and actively promote sustainable practices in daily logistics operations.
The bulk of our vehicles are shipped domestically via rail.
